Moving Ideas into Action: The Next Chapter in ARIN Policy Engagement

Moving Ideas into Action: The Next Chapter in ARIN Policy Engagement

A few months ago, we shared the results of our community engagement survey and promised that your feedback wouldn’t just sit on a shelf. The Advisory Council (AC) set out to turn your priorities — more accessible channels, clearer context, direct guidance, and diverse mediums — into tangible opportunities to participate in the Policy Development Process (PDP).

Today, we are thrilled to report back on the progress made so far and share what is coming next as we head into the ARIN 58 Public Policy and Members Meeting.

What We’ve Done: Progress on Your Feedback

Taking a cue from your input, we have focused on lowering barriers to entry, creating smaller-scale interaction spaces, and providing more convenient means of participating in policy development:

  • Mailing List Insights: To address community feedback regarding the Public Policy Mailing List (PPML) — specifically around inbox overwhelm and lost context — we launched a targeted survey focused explicitly on Draft Policy ARIN-2026-2: NRPM Section 6.5 Revision. This pulse check gathers feedback solely for this specific Draft Policy to help make policy-related email discussions more structured, accessible, and manageable for everyone.
  • Virtual Policy Open House: Get a behind-the-scenes look at how policy ideas transform into reality by connecting directly with AC members. Taking place immediately following the ARIN 58 Meeting Orientation, this informal session offers an approachable, relaxed setting to review the essentials, ask your questions, and gain confidence before the main policy conversations begin.
  • Interactive Table Topics at ARIN 58: Taking advantage of the invaluable “human element” of our face-to-face gatherings, we are hosting a dedicated Table Topic at ARIN 58. This small-group conversation during the lunch session allows for granular discussions on policy engagement without the intimidation of a large auditorium open microphone.

Community Feedback Received: Exploring an Online Community Platform for Policy Development

The AC is considering modernizing how our community collaborates on policy proposals. While the PPML has long served as our primary forum, general broadcast emails can create participation friction — flooding inboxes with topics some may prefer to skip while discouraging others from posting due to the wide audience.

To create a more flexible, and targeted, environment, we are looking into adopting a dedicated online community platform. This would allow members to engage deeply on specific policy proposals that matter to them without overwhelming the broader list.

Before taking any next steps toward a new platform, we want your input. We’ve put together a quick survey to gather community perspectives across three key areas:

  1. Alignment with PDP Principles: Ensuring any platform supports core Policy Development Process goals.
  2. Communication & Integration: Structuring effective ways to feed platform insights back to the PPML and Public Policy Meetings.
  3. Core Platform Features: Identifying the technical and functional requirements that matter most to you.
