Autonomous System Originations (Origin AS) Will Be Retired on 28 July

Posted: Wednesday, 30 April 2025

On 28 July 2025, the Origin Autonomous System (Origin AS) field will be officially removed from the ARIN database. This change follows the ARIN Board of Trustees’ July 2023 adoption of policy ARIN-2021-8, which called for the deprecation of the ‘Autonomous System Originations’ field.

Origin AS is an optional field collected by ARIN during all IPv4 and IPv6 block transactions (allocation requests, reallocation and reassignment actions, transfer and experimental requests). When Origin AS was initially implemented in 2006, it was an improvement compared to the available mechanisms at that time.

However, in the last two decades, ARIN has developed more robust mechanisms, including Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) and Internet Routing Registry (IRR) services, which provide the ability for IP address block holders to publish information about their routing intentions.

We recommend any customers who query the Origin AS field for routing security or operational purposes to transition to a more modern and secure alternative such as RPKI or IRR. These tools provide more reliable and secure options for managing and verifying routing information.

ARIN will provide reminders at regular intervals as we approach the retirement date. For help with this transition, please contact our Registration Services Help Desk for guidance by using the “Ask ARIN” feature in your ARIN Online account, or call +1 703.227.0660, Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-7:00 PM ET.
