ACSP Suggestion 2021.25: Delay Opening Statements of Support Site Until Final ARIN Candidate Slate Announced

Suggestion

Author: Chris Woodfield
Submitted On: 28 October 2021

Description: This suggestion is intended as an alternative to Suggestion 2021.21, “Allow Petitioning Board of Trustees and Advisory Council Candidates to Receive Statements Of Support”. Instead of allowing petitioning candidates to receive Statements of Support, an easier-to-implement alternative to achieving the same equity between initial-slate candidates and those added to the final slate after a successful petition could be to delay the publishing of the SoS web site until after the petition period is over and the final slate is announced. This would shorten the window for SoS to be submitted, but would give all candidates an equal, albeit shorter, period of time to receive them.

Value to Community:

To re-use the value statement submitted under Suggestion 2021.21:

Board Of Trustees and Advisory Council candidates nominated who are chosen by the NomCom for the initial slate are able to gather Statements Of Support as soon as the initial slate is announced. However, candidates who are petitioning to be added to candidate slates after this announcements are not able to do so, as their names and profiles are not listed on the Statement Of Support site. As such, candidates who successfully petition for inclusion have a much shorter window of opportunity to have SoS submitted in support of their candidacy.

As such, given the degree to which many ARIN members review submitted SOS while deciding their vote, these candidates are running with a tangible disadvantage to candidates who were selected by the NomCom for the initial slate.

Thank you for your suggestion, numbered 2021.25 on confirmed receipt, asking that we delay opening Statements of Support until the announcement of the final slate of candidates. Your suggestion was included in the Board’s discussion, alongside the feedback from the community Consultations on ARIN Elections conducted earlier in 2022. This resulted in updates to ARIN’s Bylaws and Election Process which were announced to the community on 7 June 2022, and which are being used for the current ARIN Elections.

The new election process incorporates significant changes which permit the Nomination Committee to only reject candidates that have known material defects to their qualifications, thereby reducing the likelihood of differences between the initial and final slate of candidates. We are closing this suggestion now that the Board has completed their work to revise the Election Process and related Bylaws. We thank you for your participation in ARIN’s Consultation and Suggestion Process.
