ACSP Suggestion 2021.21: Allow Petitioning Board of Trustees and Advisory Council Candidates to Receive Statements Of Support

Description: Allow petitioning BoT and AC candidates to receive Statements Of Support

Value to Community:

In the current ARIN election process, Board Of Trustees and Advisory Council candidates nominated who are chosen by the NomCom for the initial slate are able to gather Statements Of Support as soon as the initial slate is announced. However, candidates who are petitioning to be added to candidate slates after this announcements are not able to do so, as their names and profiles are not listed on the Statement Of Support site. As such, candidates who successfully petition for inclusion have a much shorter window of opportunity to have SoS submitted in support of their candidacy.

As such, given the degree to which many ARIN members review submitted SOS while deciding their vote, these candidates are running with a tangible disadvantage to candidates who were selected by the NomCom for the initial slate.

I would propose that after the initial slate is announced, candidates who file petitions to become candidates should also be listed on the SOS site, albeit with their status as petitioning candidates noted. As such, these candidates can still receive SOS during the petition period, removing this disadvantage. Should a petition be unsuccessful, that candidate’s profile is simply removed; if it is successful, the “petitioning candidate” status is removed from the candidate’s profile.

Thank you for your suggestion, numbered 2021.21 on confirmed receipt, asking that ARIN allow candidates that are petitioning to be placed on the ballot be allowed to receive statements of support during the petition period. Your suggestion was included in the Board’s discussion, alongside the feedback from the community Consultations on ARIN Elections conducted earlier in 2022. This resulted in updates to ARIN’s Bylaws and Election Process which were announced to the community on 7 June 2022, and which are being used for the current ARIN Elections.

While your suggestion was not included, the Board did make extensive changes to the Election Process that will limit the need for candidates to petition of inclusion on the ballot. We are closing this suggestion now that the Board has completed their work to revise the Election Process and related Bylaws. We thank you for your participation in ARIN’s Consultation and Suggestion Process.
