ACSP Suggestion 2017.18: Enhancement of Daily ASN Delegation File

Suggestion

Author: Anonymous
Submitted On: 09 October 2017

Description:

Currently the first column in the ASN number to name file (ftp://ftp.arin.net/info/asn.txt) uses a dash to identify a consecutive range of ASNs with identical AS Names and POC Handles.
Can that be changed so that each number stands on its own?
The first example of that in the file this one:

199-203 LVLT-199-203

With the requested change the file would list them like this:

199 LVLT-199-203
200 LVLT-199-203
201 LVLT-199-203
202 LVLT-199-203
203 LVLT-199-203

This should not break any tools that already use this data, as those tools are already designed to look up singular values.

Value to Community: This would make it easier to extract data (e.g. looking for ASN 201).

Thank you for your suggestion, numbered 2017.18 upon confirmed receipt, requesting an enhancement to the ASN delegation file that ARIN publishes via FTP on a daily basis for informational purposes.

In cases a single registrant holds a consecutive block of AS numbers in the ARIN registry, we currently identify them as a block in this file. We understand that you are requesting we modify our reporting in these cases by singly listing each registered AS number. We agree listing the AS numbers as you describe (singly) could improve the usability of the file. We plan to implement the change you have suggested in 2018.

Thank you for participating in the ARIN Consultation and Suggestion Process. Your suggestion will remain open until fully implemented.
