ACSP Suggestion 2022.30: Improvement to ROA Functionality

Suggestion

Author: Steven Wallace
Submitted On: 08 December 2022

Description: Add functionality that when reviewing a ROA create or delete action in ARIN’s web tool to show the projected change in RPKI validity state of related route announcement(s) before publication.

Value to Community: ARIN’s Hosted RPKI web tool provides a step where a user can review what the ROA will look like (ROA Handle, Prefix, max-length (if any), Origin AS, start and end validity dates) before the request is submitted. What is does not show is the impact to any matching route announcements that exist in the global BGP table. This feature is available in other RIR’s portals. This information when presented to the user before publishing the ROA will reduce the chances of a misconfiguration resulting in a negative impact to the announcement of the prefix(es) listed within the ROA. Since most ARIN organizations use the Hosted RPKI product the benefit of this added functionality will be a valuable addition to the majority of the community.

Thank you for your suggestion, numbered 2022.30 upon confirmed receipt, asking that ARIN add functionality that allows customers to view the projected change in RPKI validity state of related route announcement(s) before publication when using the Route Object Authorization (ROA) create or delete action in ARIN’s Online.

Benefits of the RPKI are directly related to the accuracy of data contained in repositories throughout the RPKI ecosystem. Providing ARIN resource holders information they need to make informed decisions when creating/modifying ROAs is a key component to maintaining the accuracy and performance of the RPKI. ARIN agrees that your suggestion to add this feature to our RPKI tools that offers visibility into the impact to announcements of their prefixes prior to the publication of ROAs in the ARIN repository will benefit the entire community. We will add this to our deployment schedule and prioritize it along with other development initiatives. Your suggestion will remain open until implemented.

Thank you for participating in the ARIN Consultation and Suggestion Process.
