ACSP Suggestion 2008.13: Generate Routing Statements for Reclaimed Address Space

Suggestion

Author: Marla Azinger
Submitted On: 21 May 2008

Description: When ARIN reclaims address space ARIN must commit to entering routing statements into the net (actually route the block themselves to look for collisions for at least a period of 30 to 60 days) before recycling a block. This is necessary to avoid route collisions. There are circumstances where companies have global addresses that may be used internally only but then at a later date begin to publicly route them. The most common occurance of this will be when Buyouts occur and records were not properly kept. This is soon going to become a more frequent issue than it already is.

Following further review including feedback from the ARIN Board of Trustees, ARIN does not guarantee the routability of any address space.

This activity would undermine that guarantee and could create a liability for ARIN. Second, this is really outside of ARIN’s scope and mission could be perceived as broadening it when ARIN should remain neutral and objective with regards to operational routing.

ACSP suggestion 2008.13 is now considered closed.
