Election System Instructions

To be eligible to vote in ARIN Elections, each ARIN Member organization must designate one Voting Contact with a valid ARIN Online account and be a General Member in Good Standing 45 days before a ballot or election.

How to:

Submit Nominations

ARIN Trustees and representatives from General Members in Good Standing may nominate up to three individuals for each open ARIN Board of Trustees position and up to three individuals for each open Advisory Council (AC) position. ARIN Trustees and representatives from General Members in Good Standing may nominate themselves, ARIN Members, or non-members.

Any individual, regardless of ARIN Membership status, may self-nominate or nominate one or more candidate(s) for any open Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC) position.

All candidates for ARIN Elections are advised of the Nomination and Appointment Conflict of Interest List.

Candidates should be aware of the specific requirements and responsibilities for the position they have been nominated for:

To Submit a Nomination

During the open nomination period, nomination(s) for the ARIN Board of Trustees and AC are accepted via an online form. ARIN’s Member Services staff sends eligible nominees an email congratulating them on their nomination and copies the nominator. An email to nominees is then auto-generated with a link and instructions to the appropriate nominee questionnaire.

Note: Multiple attempts are made by ARIN Member Services staff to contact the nominee before a nominee is dropped from consideration.

Sign Petitions

Individuals may bypass the Nomination Committee's (NomCom) ARIN Board of Trustees and AC candidate review via the petition process. Petition requests must be received within seven calendar days of the call for petitions. Signatures are due within 14 calendar days of the call for petitions. To sign a petition, you must be an eligible Voting Contact. Please see the Election Procedures page for details on this process.

  5. Check either the Yes or No response regarding if you support their petition to become a candidate.

View Candidate Information

For each candidate, ARIN publishes the unedited responses to the non-confidential candidate questionnaire, a video archive of their speech at the ARIN Public Policy and Members Meeting, and unedited Statements of Support from individuals.

The non-confidential candidate questionnaire responses are published and the ability to read or make Statements of Support is enabled after the initial candidate slate announcement. Candidate speeches become available the day following the ARIN Public Policy and Members Meeting.

  1. Go to Election Headquarters and click on the "Candidate Questionnaires & Statements of Support" link.
  2. Click on a candidate name for either the ARIN Board of Trustees, AC, or NRO NC elections.
  3. Read the nominee questionnaire responses and Statements of Support.
  4. Click on the link to view each candidate's speech.

Note: Answers to the questions in the confidential Background Issues portion of the Board of Trustees questionnaire will not be published except for the following circumstances: (1) if the nominee is not selected to be on an election ballot as a result of their provided answers and petitions to be added to the ballot or seeks a public statement from ARIN regarding their failure to be selected, or (2) if otherwise requested by the candidate.

Make Statements of Support

Note that Statements of Support are held for moderation and will be posted unedited, upon approval, within one business day. ARIN limits the number of words that can be used when submitting a Statement of Support. Statements of Support can contain no more than 150 words. ARIN reserves the right to deny any derogatory, inappropriate, or defamatory Statement of Support received.

A vote confirmation page will appear requiring you to review and confirm your ballot. If you need to correct your ballot, you must select the “back to make a correction” button. Once you’ve verified that your ballot is accurate, you must select the “confirm” button to cast your ballot. Please note that once a ballot has been cast, under no circumstances can a ballot be altered. Once your ballot has been cast, you will be emailed a copy of your vote receipt for your records.

Instructions to Split Votes for Multiple Organizations

If you are eligible to vote on behalf of more than one ARIN Member organization, you may change your vote weight per ballot. If you want to cast all of your ballots for the same group of candidates, then leave the "set the weight to" field as is (by default, this field will match your total vote weight).

If you want to cast multiple ballots and vote for different candidates per ballot, set the vote weight to a smaller number, select your candidates, and select "submit vote." The ballot screen will reappear, allowing you to repeat this process until you have cast a ballot for each ARIN Member organization you are eligible to vote on behalf of.

Example: If you have a total vote weight of 3 and set the weight to a value of 1, then click "submit vote," you will be presented another ballot with your "unused vote weight" weight reduced to 2.

Please note:

Voting Contacts may cast a vote for each open seat. Voting Contacts may not select more than the number of open seats, but they may choose to select fewer candidates than the number of open seats, or to cast a blank ballot. Voting Contacts who represent multiple ARIN Member organizations or organizations with more than one Org ID may split their votes among multiple candidates, however, Voting Contacts may not cast more than one ballot per Org ID per election.

Voter registration records are retained for future elections. Voting will be deactivated after the deadline for voting passes. All votes must be cast online through ARIN Online and confirmed before the voting booth closes to be counted. All results are archived electronically and may only be printed at the request of the President, Chief Operating Officer, or Senior Director of Communications and Member Services.
