ACSP Suggestion 2011.14: Lengthen the ARIN Online session time-out

Suggestion

Please lengthen the ARIN Online session time-out, or make it user configurable, or something. Having to login over & over again while doing occasional things during the day while at my desk is rather frustrating.

Thank you for your suggestion to increase the timeout while in ARIN Online. ARIN will look at resource utilization and may increase timeout values in the future.

Timeouts are standard web practices in managing connections and ARIN follows those practices. One idea that could be considered is to use cookies upon successful login to increase timeout values beyond the current default. This will involve additional study as it may have unacceptable risks for a website dealing with sensitive data about the management of core Internet resources, increased support costs, and code complexity dealing with session state management.

ARIN will investigate options and make a determination as to the best course of action. This suggestion will remain open until such a determination is made.

Jay,

This issue will be addressed as part of the next ARIN Online public deployment which will be released by the end of August. This suggestion will be closed out.

As part of the ARIN Online release completed on 25 July, the session timeout window was extended. The challenge, as you can appreciate, is striking the correct timing balance between session availability and limiting unintended user session access.

We continue to encourage users to maximize the time available per session by taking advantage of the existing upload file feature within ARIN Online when conducting such transactions as requesting Internet number resources.

If you have further suggestions regarding the session timeout window or other ARIN Online functionality, we would welcome your input during the next ARIN meeting in Philadelphia during the ARIN Online Users Forum. If you are unable to participate in person, we hope you can join us remotely.

Thank your for your participation in the ARIN Consultation and Suggestion process.
